My very first beverage review features FAYGO!
Recently I got into the webccomic Homestuck. For those who aren’t familiar, there’s a character, Gamzee, who, while an alien, is based on the Juggalos, better known as fans of the group Insane Clown Posse. To that end, Gamzee drinks, by the two-liter, a brand of soda called Faygo, which is particularly popular among Juggalos.
Being a huge Homestuck fan and with Faygo becoming an in-joke not just among Homestuck fans but with a group of my friends as well, I felt it was my duty (and okay, a bit of a fan-obsession) to check this stuff out.
About Faygo:
Faygo is a Detroit-based soda company, founded by Ben and Perry Feigenson in 1907. Starting with fruit punch, grape, and their famous strawberry (Red Pop), Faygo now comes in over fifty flavors (including diet versions of many of their favorites) and is distributed in Canada and the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic, and Central Southern regions of the United States.
Alas, Faygo is not yet distributed in California, so for me, finding it comes down largely to specialty stores like BevMo. And lucky for me, the grocery store just down the street also happens to carry a few flavors of Faygo. I could also order many flavors online, but I haven’t done that yet as the shipping costs are pretty prohibitive.
At any rate, with a little hunting, I managed to come up with six different flavors of Faygo to try.
Faygo Red: Hit! This strawberry soda is a bit creamy, making it sort of a mix between strawberry and crème soda. Very good, and worth getting again.
Faygo Orange: Hit! Fairly typical orange soda, I suppose. Just good stuff.
Faygo Grape: Hit! Much like the orange, it’s fairly standard grape soda, but it’s good. Like a melted popsicle that’s been carbonated!
Faygo Creme Soda: Miss :( I honestly couldn’t drink it, and god knows I tried. It has a very strong chemical taste and I only manage two sips before I was forced to give up.
Faygo Rock & Rye: Hit! It’s an unusual flavor, sort of between root beer and crème soda, something like sarsaparilla, but stronger in the rye flavor. That said, it’s very good and I’ll definitely be buying it again. :D
Faygo Root Beer: Hit! Oh, My. Gosh. This is very possibly the best root beer I’ve ever had. It’s addicting. An absolute must-have and a now frequent purchase!
Overall, Faygo is a brand that delivers sugary goodness for a cheap price. With one exception, I’ve loved everything I’ve tried!
