003. Dad’s Diet Old Fashioned Root Beer
Per 12oz bottle:…0 calories…0g sugar…10mg sodium
Ingredients:Carbonated water, caramel color, sodium benzoate, sucralose, acesulfame-k, natural & artificial flavors
About:Developed in a basement by Barney Berns and Ely Klapman in the 1930s, Dad’s Root Beer was one of the most-consumed brands of root beer throughout the US by the late 1940s. Ely’s son, Jules, brought the soda international, and the name Dad’s Old Fashioned Root Beer was coined in his father’s (and other fathers who home-brewed root beer) honor. Dad’s was the first product to use the six-pack format, introduced the half-gallon bottle, and marketed sizes from “Junior,” to “Mama,” and “Papa.” Sold by the families in the 1970s and changing hands a few times, as of 2007 the soda is now owned by The Dad’s Root Beer Company, LLC of Jasper, Indiana,.

Impressions:Hurk. One sip and I’m done. Or at least I would be if I didn’t need another taste for reviewing purposes.
The sucralose taste is intense, and in a blind tasting test I never would have guessed it was root beer. It tastes like the carbonated lovechild of Pepto Bismol and Tums. It is, frankly, awful.
Two sips is it for me. Won’t be getting this again. I’m hoping the original Dad’s Old Fashioned Root Beer is better than it’s diet counterpart!
